Manchester is a city built on work – with a capital “W”. This was, after all, the world’s first industrial city, with thousands of drudges sat by Machiavellian machines in stifling conditions working themselves senseless for the benefit of the man.

Charles Dickens captured the horror in Hard Times and Ford Madox Brown sent it up in his epic painting, Work. For those who couldn’t be bothered to, or didn’t need to, work there was always the gentlemen’s clubs: the Royal Manchester Institution, the Portico Library.
