Congratulations to Manchester City for not only winning the League, but retaining it in one of the tightest campaigns for years. But almost as remarkable is the rise and rise of Salford City, now in the Football League.

Salford were formed in 1940 – who knew? – but nothing like this looked possible until the takeover by the “United Class of ’92” in 2014, which catalysed a meteoric rise up the football pyramid.

For decades quiz setters would slip in the cliched question: Which is the biggest city in England without a Football League club? Many would answer “Salford”, wrongly. Now they can’t. (It was Salisbury, anyway).
