In Bristol, Gloucester and New Orleans, they’ve toppled statues and renamed public buildings to eradicate the legacy of the slave traders, racists and rogues.
But in Manchester we’re really behind the times. The Portico Library stands on Mosley Street. The Mosleys were the feudal lords of the manor for hundreds of years. If that wasn’t bad enough, a later scion was Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists.
It’s embarrassing. It’s a connection we need to remove. Visitors must think we’re honouring the fascist leader. Yet we have no city centre streets honouring our greatest family – the Pankhursts.
Penguin author Ed Glinert, Manchester’s most prolific tour guide, makes the case.
