There have been some bad people in charge of Manchester and Salford over the years – and you, the good people of the twin cities, have been bossed about by them and sometimes even voted for them!
We’re talking about Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists (that’s Oswald Mosley, 6th Baronet of Ancoats, can you believe?); John Stourton, MP for South Salford, who made Mosley look like a toytown fascist; the Duke of Wellington, who didn’t believe the people should have the vote; and William Hulton, who described the Peterloo Massacre as “the proudest day of my life”.
We shall remember their foul deeds.
